NCCR FAQ

Q. What should I wear to the camp?

A. T-shirt and tight fitting shorts (such as bike shorts - not  basketball shorts!)

Q. What do I need to bring with me?

A. Just bring a filled water bottle and a positive attitude! We’ll provide snacks.

Q. What if I can’t swim?

A. We will provide free swim lessons at the McGaw YMCA before  the camp, to make sure you feel comfortable on the water.

Q. Will I wear a life jacket?

A. Life jackets are not required after your swim lessons, but we will have some available if you want to wear them.

Q. Are the boats tippy?

A. Yes they can be, but your coaches will teach you how your oars can keep them stable.

Q. How many people row in a boat?

A. There will be four rowers and one coxswain, who is the person that steers the boat

Q. What if my arms aren’t strong enough to row?

A. Believe it or not, the most important muscles in rowing are  your legs! The boats have sliding seats which allow you to use your legs for power.

Q. Will girls and boys row together in the same boat?

A. Maybe - it depends on who signs up!

Q. What should I expect on a typical day?

A. The first day will be a land-based introduction to rowing. You will learn on rowing machines called ergometers. Then you will learn how to carry a boat and oars down to the dock. After that, you will row on the North Channel River, with a motorized coaching boat right next to you the whole time. If you have any reservations or concerns about anything, just ask a coach - we’re there to help you!
